How EFT Tapping Works

EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques), often referred to as "Tapping," is a powerful self-help tool that blends modern psychology with the ancient practice of acupressure. It involves gently tapping on specific meridian points on your body—similar to acupuncture but without needles—while focusing on a particular issue or emotion.

This method is designed to help reduce stress, ease emotional discomfort, and even alleviate physical symptoms by calming the body’s nervous system and rewiring how the brain responds to challenges.

The Science Behind EFT ​​​

EFT Tapping is more than just a wellness trend—it’s a technique supported by research. Studies have shown that pressing on EFT Tapping points can reduce cortisol levels (the body’s stress hormone) and promote a sense of calm. It works by addressing the fight-or-flight response, a mechanism our bodies developed to deal with threats.

When we’re overwhelmed by stress, trauma, or negative emotions, this fight-or-flight response can get "stuck." EFT helps release these emotional and physical blocks, allowing you to reset and find balance.

With traditional talk psychotherapies you gain insights into the causes of your emotional difficulties and the new behaviours you would like to have.

However, you are left needing to use your will power to try to behave in these new healthier ways.

You still feel the internal urges in your "gut" to behave in the old ways.

EFT Research – More Effective and Much Faster

 

The first large-scale clinical trial of  EFT or Tapping Therapy is reported in some detail in Energy Psychology Interactive and summarized here.

Approximately 5,000 patients diagnosed at intake with an anxiety disorder were randomly assigned to an experimental group (EFT) or a control group (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) with medication, which is traditionally considered the therapy of choice). Here are the results:
